John William Karwacki's life was full and satisfying. He simply loved to drum, and he loved his band and his bandmates.

He was a natural salesman. He loved flying remote control aircraft, and listening to and playing music for others. He tenaciously acquired the skills necessary to restore 60's vintage MGB sport cars.

He was mostly a home body who loved time on the Lake of the Woods to fish and take in nature.

His second wife Sherry Karwacki, son John Jr. , stepsons Jim Hanstead and Colton will surely miss him as all who knew him do.
Born and raised in Kenora, Ontario, Terry was co-founder of The Tempests. He remained with the band throughout his high school years as rhythm guitarist and vocalist and quit the band (known then as Satan and the D-Men) shortly after the Buddy Knox Tour to pursue his education. In the years that followed, he continued to perform all types of music in many Kenora musical groups including, The Wayne Coner Quartet, The Delegated Authority, Paxtons Backstreet Carnival, Verna Maki's Orchestra and Whiskeyjack.
In 1979, he travelled throughout Western Canada with Whiskeyjack and eventually settled down, married and raised a family, living in such locations as Edmonton, Alberta, Saskatoon, Prince Albert and Kindersley, Saskatchewan and Kenora, Ontario. In 1982, He received his "Certified Hospital Orderly" course certificate from Confederation College in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Terry is currently retired and resides in Thunder Bay with his fiancee.
An earlier writing project resulted in the recording of a 12 song cassette called, 'Music With A Message - For Children.' The entire cassette was written by Terry and he performs the complete musical background as well on Synthesizer and Guitar. It has sold exceptionally well and is still available upon request at a cost of only $10.00.
Terry is presently playing with a local group called The Fabulous Rocker Brothers Band and is helping to keep 60's music alive in Thunder Bay and area. These fellows have just been chosen to play at the 2005 Thunder Bay Blues Festival in July with such notable musicians as John Mayall & The Blues Breakers, Dr. John, and Commander Cody.Peter Karwackihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04122070054615699852noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2023147087344066751.post-52823672423940670052014-04-18T18:58:00.003-07:002014-04-18T19:06:14.976-07:00The Holy Grail: A Gig

<h3 class="fw-title" style="background-color: #2e2e2e; color: #56d2b3; font-family: "lucida sans", arial; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px; padding: 10px 0px; text-transform: uppercase;">

“Satan and the D-Men” began performing in their hometown of Kenora, Ontario in 1962 under the name, “The Tempests.” There was much competition but they were always in the lead and performing wherever they could in North Western Ontario.

Determined to get ahead in the music business, they appeared on Winnipeg’s Channel 7 talent show, “Hi Jinks” where they received very favourable reviews and also at The “Twilight Zone “ on St. Mary’s Road.

Following those performances, the band then changed their name to “Satan and the D-Men” and were hired to play community clubs and school dances in Winnipeg. They were approached by Fred Glazerman who offered to manage the band and moved them from Kenora to a house on Warsaw Avenue in Winnipeg.

On November 12, 1965, the band appeared with the Deverons, the Jury, the Shondels and Jack & Jill on the “Cavalcade Of Stars” at the old Osbourne Street Auditorium. This program was sponsored by Monarch Wear of Canada and included performances in Portage La Prairie and Brandon, Manitoba.

The band then signed with Eagle Records and released a 45 of “She’ll Lie” and “Linda.” Brian Ouelette then left the group and the other members took over the vocal duties. Further recording was done at CKRC but the songs were not released on vinyl. These can be heard on the CD, "Buried Treasures" - Winnipeg Rock Gems 1958-1974.

After gaining tremendous popularity and playing many dances in the city including "J’s Discotheque" and Transcona’s "Pink Panther," Satan and the D-Men were assured by Glazerman that they would be the opening act for the “Rolling Stones” first Winnipeg appearance. However, a last minute change saw another group take that spot.

They then added singer Lucille Emond, a regular on television's "Music Hop" and toured as back-up band for “Buddy Knox” in Winnipeg, Kenora, Thunder Bay, Ont., Portage La Prairie, Brandon and Birtle, Manitoba.

After a couple of years in Winnipeg, “Satan and the D-Men” decided to separate and each member went their own way to further their education, to get married and to have a family.

Each continued in the music business with their own bands and projects and in 1982, re-formed to play for Kenora’s Centennial year. Since then, the group has played on a yearly basis and 2002 saw the release of their second CD

Here is the band at Abernot Studio, St. Vital, Winnipeg, Manitoba. The germ of an idea?

It was like a homecoming for Winnipeg's Burton Cummings last night at the Whitecap Pavillion. From the opening chords to No Sugar Tonight through the last of his encore Share the Land, the sold-out crowd sang along with gusto.

His references to playing the Kenricia Hotel and chumming around with Satan and the D-Men at the old Chez Le Rat clearly hit the mark. One could say he had them in the palm of his hand, even before playing the big smash hits These Eyes and American Woman. The boisterous audience even knew the words to Running Back from Saskatoon, which he dubbed the first really Canadian hit, along with his epic rock ballad Break it to them Gently, which he spun out into a tribute to old time rock 'n roll.

Looking slim and trim, he was in fine voice. Hard to believe he looks better today than he did 20 years ago, when he really did look the image of a bloated old rocker. On the eve of his 65th birthday, Cummings worked up a good sweat through his two-hour set. He didn't stray far from his greatest hits from the Guess Who or his solo career. The backing band was up to the task, even if he did miss a few notes on the flute solos in (She's Come) Undone. There wasn't any new material from an upcoming album, and this was just fine for most who paid the $80 to see him. One could've wished the same from opening act Prism, who offered -- not just one but two drum solos -- before resuming their selection of more popular material.

By contrast, Cummings only allowed himself a couple of political remarks, when he talked about recent shootings before launching into Guns Guns Guns or the prelude to Hand Me Down World, but really that was mainly to catch his breath. There was a nice shoutout to a fan, who brought along an old album cover for signing. A couple of nice thank-yous by the host for volunteers Brenda Chambers-Ivey and Joanne Hill.

All in all, it was a nostalgic walk down memory lane that left most fans more than satisfied. - See more at: http://www.kenoraonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2752:burton-cummings-rolls-through-his-hits&catid=4:q104-blog&Itemid=54#sthash.0I2Rup3h.dpufPeter Karwackihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04122070054615699852noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2023147087344066751.post-4802738296340972852014-04-18T18:08:00.002-07:002014-04-18T18:20:52.238-07:00Garage Band Details
